Lower, hotter, and a longer season

At roughly 4,700 feet Pueblo runs warmer than Colorado Springs and holds its season longer at both ends, which makes it a sensible place to put exterior work in early spring and late autumn. The trade-off is the height of summer: direct sun on a dark wall pushes the surface temperature well above the air temperature, and a coating that flashes off too fast does not level, does not bond as well, and shows lap marks. Down here, working to the sun through the day matters more than it does up the road.

Historic stock, stucco and masonry

Pueblo has some of the oldest housing in southern Colorado, with substantial pre-1940 stock around the Union Avenue district, Bessemer and the older north side. That brings genuine masonry and stucco work rather than lap siding: hard plaster over lath, brick, and surfaces that have been coated many times. It also means the pre-1978 lead rule applies to a large share of the market, and how a contractor answers that question is a fair test of the rest of their process.

Ask about breathability before coating masonry

The instinct on a cracked stucco or masonry wall is to seal it. Sometimes that is right - an elastomeric coating bridges hairline cracking and sheds water. But it also slows the wall's ability to dry outward, and on an older masonry wall that already holds moisture, sealing the face can trap it and make the problem worse. On historic stock especially, that is a judgement made after looking at the wall, its exposure and its drainage, not a default specification.

My house is over a hundred years old. Is that a problem?

No, but it is a different job. Older Pueblo homes usually carry many coats of history, masonry or hard plaster rather than lap siding, and a strong likelihood of lead paint under federal rules if they predate 1978. All of that changes the preparation and belongs in the estimate rather than being found mid-job.

When is the best time to paint down here?

Spring and autumn are excellent, and the season runs longer than it does in Colorado Springs because Pueblo is both lower and warmer. Mid-summer is workable but has to be planned around the sun rather than the clock, because a wall in direct afternoon sun gets far hotter than the air.
